Significant Online Disruption Affects Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale internet disruption has impacted many online platforms and mobile apps around the world, with users noting problems accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The impacted apps comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated operations including its key e-commerce platform and the Ring security home security firm.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of difficulties accessing the the tax authority online portal on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring customers turned to social media to complain their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, notifications of issues on individual platforms ran into the tens of thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the issue began in the Atlantic coast of the United States at AWS, a unit that offers crucial web infrastructure for a host of firms, who utilize space on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting system.

The ripple effect appeared to affect platforms globally, and the outage tracking website indicating problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors web disruptions, additionally noted a rise in problems on Monday morning, with many of them found in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the issues started.
